RHEA-2009:0160 - Product Enhancement Advisory
Synopsis
xorg-x11-drv-i810 enhancement update
Type/Severity
Product Enhancement Advisory
Red Hat Insights patch analysis
Identify and remediate systems affected by this advisory.
Topic
An updated xorg-x11-drv-i810 driver package that provides additional
hardware support is now available.
Description
xorg-x11-drv-i810 is an Intel integrated graphics video driver for the
X.Org implementation of the X Window System.
This updated package provides the following bug fixes and enhancements:
- support for 4-series hardware ("Cantiga" and "Eaglelake") and systems
incorporating Intel vPro technology ("Montevina" and "McCreary").
- HDMI support for 4-series, 915, and 965 hardware by incorporating the
hdmi.c library.
- support for hardware overlay video on 965 parts.
- X would stop responding when attempting to use 3D acceleration on
4-series hardware. 3D hardware acceleration on these cards is not presently
supported in the version of mesa that is supplied with Red Hat Enterprise
Linux. The version of the driver supplied with this advisory loads the
direct rendering manager (DRM) to use for 2D but does not load or use it
for 3D. Although 3D hardware acceleration is still not available, the
situation where X stops responding is avoided.
- when switching modes on i845 graphics adapters, older versions of this
driver did not follow the disable sequence that was expected by the
hardware. As a result, switching to a non-native resolution on i845
hardware would sometimes cause the display to go blank. The version of the
driver supplied with this advisory changes the sequence of events as it
disables the adapter prior to switching modes. The user can now switch
modes without the screen going blank.
- users with graphics adapters based on Q965 or Q963 chipsets may have
experienced flickering on their displays. This updated version of the
driver has been built against an updated randr source and does not cause
the flickering effect.
- during the Red Hat Enterprise Linux installation process, the installer
(anaconda) probes the graphics driver. On a system incorporating Intel vPro
technology, the screen may have gone blank at this point and not returned.
This was because dpll_reg had not yet been initialized and was required for
VGA on these systems. This updated version of the driver ensures that
dpll_reg has been initialised and is available when needed. This allows
installation on systems incorporating Intel vPro technology to proceed
normally.
All users of the xorg-x11-drv-i810 driver should upgrade to this updated
package, which resolves these issues.
