RHEA-2009:0089 - Product Enhancement Advisory
Synopsis
smartmontools enhancement update
Type/Severity
Product Enhancement Advisory
Red Hat Insights patch analysis
Identify and remediate systems affected by this advisory.
Topic
An updated smartmontools package that addresses several bugs is now available.
Description
The smartmontools package contains two utility programs (smartctl and
smartd) to control and monitor storage systems using the Self-Monitoring,
Analysis and Reporting Technology System (SMART) built into most modern ATA
and SCSI hard disks. In many cases, these utilities will provide advanced
warning of disk degradation and failure.
The smartmontools package has been upgraded to version 5.38, which has
improved autodetection of hardware devices, and a much larger database of
supported devices.
In addition, this updated package addresses the following problems:
- SELinux prevented smartmontools from monitoring 3ware RAID devices. In
this updated package, smartmontools is once again able to monitor such devices.
- improved support for the CCISS RAID arrays.
Users of smartmontools should upgrade to this updated package, which
resolves these issues.
Solution
Before applying this update, make sure that all previously-released
errata relevant to your system have been applied.
