RHEA-2008:0782 - Product Enhancement Advisory
Synopsis
new package: java-1.6.0-sun
Type/Severity
Product Enhancement Advisory
Topic
New java-1.6.0-sun packages that comprise Sun's Java 6 release are now
available.
Description
The following packages comprise Sun's 1.6.0 Java release:
java-1.6.0-sun
java-1.6.0-sun-demo
java-1.6.0-sun-devel
java-1.6.0-sun-jdbc
java-1.6.0-sun-plugin
java-1.6.0-sun-src
These packages include the Sun Java 6 Runtime Environment, Sun Java 6
Software Development Kit, and Sun's 1.6.0_06 SDK release.
The Java 6 Runtime Environment (JRE) consists of the Java virtual machine,
the Java platform core classes and supporting files, and includes a Web
browser plug-in for running Java applets. It is the runtime section of the
Java 6 SDK, but without the development tools such as compilers and debuggers.
The Java 6 Software Development Kit (SDK) is a development environment for
building applications, applets, and components that can be deployed on the
Java platform. The Java 6 SDK software includes tools useful for developing
and testing programs written in the Java programming language. The Java 6
SDK software also includes a JDBC/ODBC bridge for Java applications that
need to communicate with a database.
Users of java-1.5.0-sun may install these new 1.6.0 packages in parallel
and switch between the new and old Java environments using the alternatives
tool.
