RHEA-2007:0230 - Product Enhancement Advisory
Synopsis
mcelog enhancement update
Type/Severity
Product Enhancement Advisory
Red Hat Insights patch analysis
Identify and remediate systems affected by this advisory.
Topic
Updated mcelog packages that add support for ECC error detection on
newer AMD systems are now available.
Description
The mcelog packages contain a utility that enables Machine Check Exceptions
generated by modern processors to be logged and handled.
ECC memory errors occur from time to time, caused by random beta
radiation or by deterioration of DRAM components. Setting an MCE
threshold allows a system administrator to distinguish between harmless
beta radiation and a real life failing DRAM DIMM. The new AMD
Deerhound/Greyhound processors available in 2007 require the support
present in these updated packages to access this functionality.
Users are advised to upgrade to these updated mcelog packages, which add
this enhancement.
Solution
Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata
relevant to your system have been applied.
This update is available via Red Hat Network. To use Red Hat Network,
launch the Red Hat Update Agent with the following command:
up2date
This will start an interactive process that will result in the appropriate
RPMs being upgraded on your system.
