RHEA-2004:206 - Product Enhancement Advisory
Synopsis
Updated cyrus-sasl packages available
Type/Severity
Product Enhancement Advisory
Topic
Updated cyrus-sasl packages are now available. This update allows
applications which use version 1 of the cyrus-sasl library to verify user
passwords using the saslauthd service.
Description
The cyrus-sasl packages contain the Cyrus implementation of SASL.
SASL is the Simple Authentication and Security Layer, a method for
adding authentication support to connection-based protocols.
Applications which use cyrus-sasl can attempt to perform simple
verification of plaintext passwords by connecting to a locally-running
saslauthd service in cases where the applications themselves have
insufficient privileges to do so.
The cyrus-sasl packages include version 2 of the saslauthd service, which
expect requests from applications to be formatted differently than
version 1 of the cyrus-sasl library. This caused unexpected
failures when applications which use version 1 of the cyrus-sasl library
attempted to use saslauthd.
This update modifies version 1 of the cyrus-sasl library to format requests
to saslauthd in the same way that version 2 of the library would when the
application's SASL configuration file specifies "saslauthd_version: 2".
NOTE: version 1 of the cyrus-sasl library will be removed in a future
release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Application developers are strongly
encouraged to update applications which use version 1 of the library to use
version 2 instead.
Solution
Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata
relevant to your system have been applied.
To update all RPMs for your particular architecture, run:
rpm -Fvh [filenames]
where [filenames] is a list of the RPMs you wish to upgrade. Only those
RPMs which are currently installed will be updated. Those RPMs which are
not installed but included in the list will not be updated. Note that you
can also use wildcards (*.rpm) if your current directory *only* contains the
desired RPMs.
Please note that this update is also available via Red Hat Network. Many
people find this an easier way to apply updates. To use Red Hat Network,
launch the Red Hat Update Agent with the following command:
up2date
This will start an interactive process that will result in the appropriate
RPMs being upgraded on your system.
If up2date fails to connect to Red Hat Network due to SSL
Certificate Errors, you need to install a version of the
up2date client with an updated certificate. The latest version of
up2date is available from the Red Hat FTP site and may also be
downloaded directly from the RHN website:
