RHBA-2007:0820 - Bug Fix Advisory
Synopsis
strace bug fix and enhancement update

Identify and remediate systems affected by this advisory.
Topic
Updated strace packages that fix various bugs and add an enhancement are
now available.
Description
The strace program intercepts and records the system calls called and
received by a running process.
These updated packages fix the following bugs:
- using strace on a multithreaded program caused the "Ctrl-C" key
combination to hang strace, instead of terminating strace correctly. Note,
this behavior could also occur when tracing non-multithreaded programs. In
these updated packages the "Ctrl-C" key combination terminates strace.
- when attached to a running process using the "strace -p" command,
pressing the "Ctrl-C" key combination before any system call is traced,
caused a SIGSTOP signal to be sent to the attached process. The attached
process would hang, but could be resumed using the "fg" or "bg" commands.
- running the "strace -u" command and specifying a non-existing user caused
a "strace: cannot find user `(null)'" error. The strace program now
responds with a "strace: cannot find user '[user]' error when a
non-existing username is supplied with the -u option, where '[user]' is the
username supplied.
- a segmentation fault occurred when using the 64-bit strace program to
trace a 32-bit application that made a utime() system call.
- running the 64-bit strace program on a 32-bit binary caused a "umovestr:
Input/output error" error.
This update also adds the following enhancement:
- decode parameters for the stat64() system call, for x86 programs running
on the AMD64 architecture.
Users are advised to upgrade to these updated packages, which
resolve these issues and add this enhancement.
