Synopsis
MAKEDEV bug fix update
Type/Severity
Bug Fix Advisory
Red Hat Insights patch analysis
Identify and remediate systems affected by this advisory.
Topic
An updated MAKEDEV package that fixes various issues is now available for
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.
Description
The MAKEDEV utility is used to create and maintain the static files that
reside in the /dev directory, which correspond to particular devices
supported by the Linux kernel.
The CPU microcode update facility used in Red Hat Enterprise Linux on i686
systems is written to expect the device that corresponds to the kernel's
microcode update driver to be named /dev/cpu/microcode. MAKEDEV would
create it with the name /dev/cpu/0/microcode. This package updates the
location of the device node that is created for use in applying microcode
updates so that it matches the expectations of the microcode update utility.
The Red Hat Enterprise Linux installation program, Anaconda, could not
successfully update to a new release on s390 and s390x architectures
because the console device nodes were not created correctly for those
architectures. This update includes corrected data which allows Anaconda to
succeed.
All users of i686, s390, and s390x systems should upgrade to this updated
package, which resolves these issues on the affected platforms.
Solution
Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata
relevant to your system have been applied.
This update is available via Red Hat Network. To use Red Hat Network,
launch the Red Hat Update Agent with the following command:
up2date
This will start an interactive process that will result in the appropriate
RPMs being upgraded on your system.
