RHBA-2006:0056 - Bug Fix Advisory
Synopsis
ypserv bug fix update
Type/Severity
Bug Fix Advisory
Red Hat Insights patch analysis
Identify and remediate systems affected by this advisory.
Topic
An updated ypserv package that includes dns lookup functionality and fixes
various bugs is now available.
Description
The Network Information Service (NIS) is a system that provides
network information (login names, passwords, home directories, group
information) to all of the machines on a network. NIS allows users
to log in on any machine on the network, as long as the machine has
the NIS client programs running and the user's password is recorded in
the NIS passwd database. NIS was formerly known as Sun Yellow Pages
(YP).
This erratum fixes the following issues:
- Re-added DNS lookup functionality into ypserv which was removed during
the update from ypserv-1.3 to ypserv-2.8.
- Upgrading the ypserv package will no longer replace /var/yp/Makefile if
the user has modified it.
All users of ypserv should upgrade to this updated package, which resolves
these issues.
Solution
Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata
relevant to your system have been applied.
This update is available via Red Hat Network. To use Red Hat Network,
launch the Red Hat Update Agent with the following command:
up2date
This will start an interactive process that will result in the appropriate
RPMs being upgraded on your system.
