RHBA-2005:842 - Bug Fix Advisory
Synopsis
shadow-utils bug fix update
Type/Severity
Bug Fix Advisory
Red Hat Insights patch analysis
Identify and remediate systems affected by this advisory.
Topic
Updated shadow-utils packages that address an issue in Useradd which can
hang systems when run on old kernels is now available.
Description
The shadow-utils package includes programs for converting UNIX password
files to the shadow password format as well as programs for managing user
and group accounts.
The audit-enhanced version of shadow-utils sends audit events to the kernel
when changes are made to user accounts. Old kernels (-11 and earlier) have
issues when messages are sent to the audit netlink socket. One occasional
effect is that the kernel hangs on some architectures; however, the more
likely scenario is when useradd is called during an upgrade from Red Hat
Enterprise Linux 4 Update 1 to Update 2. Shadow-utils has been updated to
avoid use of the audit system whenever it is run on an old kernel.
All users are advised to upgrade to the updated packages, which resolve
this issue.
Solution
Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata
relevant to your system have been applied.
This update is available via Red Hat Network. To use Red Hat Network,
launch the Red Hat Update Agent with the following command:
up2date
This will start an interactive process that will result in the appropriate
RPMs being upgraded on your system.
