RHBA-2005:309 - Bug Fix Advisory
Synopsis
shadow-utils bug fix update
Type/Severity
Bug Fix Advisory
Red Hat Insights patch analysis
Identify and remediate systems affected by this advisory.
Topic
An updated shadow-utils package is now available.
Description
The shadow-utils package includes the necessary programs for converting
UNIX password files to the shadow password format, as well as programs for
managing user and group accounts.
Previously, the useradd command did not allow a username to end with the
dollar symbol. With this update, such usernames are allowed.
There is a new '-a' flag to usermod. This flag can only be used in
conjunction with the -G option. It causes usermod to append user to the
current supplementary group list. This flag is helpful in everyday
admin duties.
This update provides logging of important events into the audit system.
There is a new "-l" useradd option in this update. This option causes
useradd not to add new users into lastlog log file.
Sg did not work because it was just a symlink to util-linux
newgrp. Full function sg, provided by shadow-utils, comes with this update.
All users of shadow-utils should upgrade to this updated package, which
resolves these issues.
Solution
Before applying this update, make sure that all previously-released
errata relevant to your system have been applied. Use Red Hat
