RHBA-2004:595 - Bug Fix Advisory
Synopsis
Updated yp-tools package
Type/Severity
Bug Fix Advisory
Topic
An updated yp-tools package that fixes a buffer overflow in the yppasswd
command is now available.
Description
The Network Information Service (NIS) is a system which provides network
information (login names, passwords, home directories, group information)
to all of the machines on a network. NIS can enable users to login on any
machine on the network, as long as the machine has the NIS client programs
running and the user's password is recorded in the NIS passwd database.
NIS was formerly known as Sun Yellow Pages (YP).
This non-critical overflow could have occurred when the gecos field of the
password entry was read in and was longer than 1024 bytes (which is very
unlikely). If this were to occur, an internal buffer that expected to be
NULL terminated would not be, which would have caused very unexpected
behavior. Please note that this issue poses no security threat to yp-tools.
This updated package ensures byte 1023 of the internal buffer is always set
to the NULL character.
All users of yp-tools should upgrade to this updated package, which
resolves this issue.
