RHBA-2004:594 - Bug Fix Advisory
Synopsis
Updated busybox package
Type/Severity
Bug Fix Advisory
Topic
An updated busybox package that is no longer compiled as a static module in
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 is now available.
Description
Busybox is a single binary which includes versions of a large number of
system commands, including a shell. This package can be very useful for
recovering from certain types of system failures, particularly those
involving broken shared libraries.
The BusyBox program is a critical system recovery tool. For example,
if a script has a broken /etc/ld.so.preload file, then no dynamically
linked executables are able to run.
In Red Hat Enterprise Linux 2.1, when booting the kernel with
"init=ash.static", then using busybox, this problem is recoverable without
the need to set up a custom rescue disk.
In Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3, the busybox binary is no longer statically
linked, which makes the busybox.static and ash.static files no longer
needed, since every other program on the system is dynamically linked.
All users of busybox should upgrade to this updated package, which
resolves this issue.
