RHBA-2004:531 - Bug Fix Advisory
Synopsis
Updated metacity package
Type/Severity
Bug Fix Advisory
Topic
An updated metacity package that fixes various bugs and adds enhancements
is now available.
Description
Metacity is a simple window manager that integrates with GNOME 2.
This update contains the following fixes and enhancements to metacity:
- Clicking a window title bar resulted in the window "sticking" to the
mouse.
- Unrolling/unshading a window in wireframe mode resulted in the repainting
of artifacts in some applications.
- The configuration option "strict_pointer_mode" was added. In mouse and
sloppy focus modes, this option will disable heuristics that simplify
keyboard navigation. For example, when opening a new window, the new
window does not have focus unless it contains the mouse pointer.
Similarly, when switching workspaces or closing windows, focus will go to
the window with the mouse pointer, not the most recently used window.
This mode is not recommended if you often move between windows or
open/close windows via the keyboard. Future releases may avoid the need
for this option by being smarter about when to focus new windows and
simply changing the normal behavior of mouse/sloppy modes. The following
website shows detailed draft plans:
http://cvs.gnome.org/viewcvs/metacity/doc/how-to-get-focus-right.txt
- A temporary configuration option was added to disable raising windows on
mouse button click. This is considered a workaround for applications
designed for traditional UNIX window managers, and will be phased out in
future releases. However, future releases may have intelligence to avoid
raising windows in cases such as initiating drag and drop.
- In some cases, especially with strict_pointer_mode, the keyboard
focus is set to "None", which effectively disables the keyboard until
a window is clicked. Metacity now detects this state and fixes it.
- Full screen windows would "flicker" (rapidly focus and unfocus) in
wireframe mode.
All users of metacity should upgrade to this updated package, which
resolves these issues.
