RHBA-2004:485 - Bug Fix Advisory
Synopsis
Updates ypbind package
Type/Severity
Bug Fix Advisory
Topic
An updated ypbind package that fixes scalablity issues in large systems is
now available.
Description
The Network Information Service (NIS) is a system that provides
network information (login names, passwords, home directories, group
information) to all of the machines on a network. NIS can allow users
to log in on any machine on the network, as long as the machine has
the NIS client programs running and the user's password is recorded in
the NIS passwd database. NIS was formerly known as Sun Yellow Pages
(YP).
The original version of ypbind had a problem when it was used in large
scale network environments. The keep-alive feature was used, which
generated a large amount of network traffic. An updated ypbind package now
contains a fix that does not require the keep-alive feature, and simply
tries a rebind if an error occured during queries.
All users of ypbind should upgrade to this updated package, which resolves
this issue.
