Using Red Hat Network with Red Hat Linux 6.2

Please note: Red Hat Linux 6.2 and 7.0 are no longer supported platforms. Previously released errata for these releases will still be available for a limited time; however, no new errata will be published for these releases. We recommend that you upgrade to a supported release. The Red Hat release support schedule can be found at http://www.redhat.com/apps/support/errata/.

Red Hat Linux 6.2 shipped with a program named Red Hat Update Agent (up2date). However, this version of Red Hat Update Agent can not be used to connect to Red Hat Network to receive package updates. You need a new version of the Red Hat Update Agent and the Red Hat Network Registration Client to use Red Hat Network on a Red Hat Linux 6.2 system.

To download and install these programs, use the following steps:

  1. In a shell prompt, login as root and execute the command mkdir rhnpackages to create a new directory in which to download the packages.

  2. In the same shell prompt, execute the command cd rhnpackages to change to the new directory.

  3. Download the following packages in the new rhnpackages directory: (You might need hold down the [Shift] key and then left-click on the filename to save it or right-click the file and choose Save.)

    • Missing file: up2date-2.8.39-1.6.2.i386.rpm

    • Missing file: python-xmlrpc-1.5.1-6.x.7.i386.rpm

    • Missing file: python-1.5.2-27.6.x.i386.rpm

    • Missing file: popt-1.6.2-6x.i386.rpm

    • Missing file: python-popt-0.8.8-6.x.1.i386.rpm

    • Missing file: rhn_register-2.8.27-1.6.2.i386.rpm

    • Missing file: openssl-0.9.5a-29.i386.rpm

    • Missing file: db3-3.1.17-4.6x.i386.rpm

    • Missing file: rpm-4.0.2-6x.i386.rpm

    • Missing file: rpm-python-4.0.2-6x.i386.rpm

If you want to use the graphical versions of the Red Hat Network Registration Client and the Red Hat Update Agent, you will also need the following packages. If you are not running the X Window System, do not download these packages:

    • Missing file: up2date-gnome-2.8.39-1.6.2.i386.rpm

    • Missing file: rhn_register-gnome-2.8.27-1.6.2.i386.rpm

    • Missing file: usermode-1.37-1.6.i386.rpm

  4. Go back to the shell prompt in the rhnpackages directory (you must still be root) and execute the following commands:

       rpm -Uvh db3-3.1.17-4.6x.i386.rpm
       rpm -Uvh rpm-4.0.2-6x.i386.rpm
       rpm -Uvh openssl-0.9.5a-29.i386.rpm
       rpm -Uvh popt-1.6.2-6x.i386.rpm
       rpm -Uvh python*
       rpm -Uvh rpm-python-4.0.2-6x.i386.rpm
       rpm -Uvh rhn_register-2.8.27-1.6.2.i386.rpm
       rpm -Uvh up2date-2.8.39-1.6.2.i386.rpm

This will upgrade the existing Red Hat Update Agent to the version that works with Red Hat Network. The Red Hat Network Registration Client will also be installed with these commands along with other packages your system needs to run the Red Hat Network programs.

  5. Because you will have installed a new version of RPM, you will have to execute the following command: rpm --rebuilddb to update the RPM database. This may take a while to run.

  6. After the rpm are installed and the RPM database is rebuilt, run the Red Hat Network Registration Client ( rhn_register ) to register your system. DO NOT enter a Product ID during the registration process. It is not required.

  7. Login to your account at http://rhn.redhat.com and configure your preferences for Red Hat Network and your registered systems.

  8. Refer to the Red Hat Network User Reference Guide available at http://rhn.redhat.com/help for step-by-step instructions on registering with and using Red Hat Network.
