RHEA-2009:1557 - Product Enhancement Advisory
Synopsis
New package: xfsdump
Type/Severity
Product Enhancement Advisory
Topic
xfsdump, a new package that provides tools for creating and managing XFS
file system backups, is now available.
Description
The xfsdump package provides several utilities for managing XFS file
systems, including xfsrestore; xfsdump; and xfs_fsr, the XFS file system
defragmentation tool.
The xfsdump application examines the contents of an XFS file system,
determines which files need to be backed up, and copies those files to a
specified storage device in an xfsdump-specific format. It uses
XFS-specific directives for optimizing the dump of an XFS file system, and
can also back up extended file attributes stored on XFS file systems.
Backups created through xfsdump are "endian-safe"; as such, these backups
can be transferred between Linux machines of different architectures or
even between IRIX machines.
The xfsrestore application, on the other hand, restores a backup created
with xfsdump. xfsrestore can also layer subsequent incremental backups on
top of the original xfsdump backup. It can also restore single files and
directory subtrees from full or partial backups.
The xfs_fsr application improves the organization of mounted XFS file
systems. Its reorganization algorithm operates on one file at a time,
compacting or otherwise improving the layout of the file extents (i.e.
contiguous blocks of file data). (BZ#469436)
Users of XFS file systems are encouraged to install this new package, which
provides these utilities.
