Details

Updated GNU Compiler Collection (GCC) version 4.1.2 technology preview
packages that fix various bugs and add enhancements are now available.

The gcc4 packages contain technology previews of the GNU Compiler
Collection version 4.x. They include C, C++, limited Fortran 95 compilers,
and a Java compiler and support libraries.

These packages update the GCC 4.1.2 snapshot, fix various bugs and add
various enhancements. This puts the preview packages more in line with the
default compiler in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.2. Note that in the gcc4
packages, g++ compiles and links against the gcc 3.4.6 version of
libstdc++, instead of the version 4.1.2 of libstdc++ which Red Hat
Enterprise Linux 5.2 compiles and links against.

These updated packages provide the following enhancements:

* multilib conflicts have been fixed in order to make it possible to
compile and link both 32-bit and 64-bit C++ and Java programs on the same host.

* support for the SSE5 instruction set in gcc and binutils.

* insufficient debug info for Fortran arrays which used descriptors has
been improved.

Due to package dependencies, these gcc4 packages are not identical to the
equivalent packages in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.2. The following
enhancements, which are included with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.2, were
not included in earlier releases of gcc4 for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4,
and are again not included in these packages:

* support for the '-fstack-protector' option is not included in these packages.

* support for the '--hash-style=gnu' option is not included in these packages.

* support for the '-msecure-plt' option on the PowerPC architecture is not
included in these packages.

* support for the '-mlong-double-128' option on the PowerPC and IBM S/390
architectures is not included in these packages.

gcc4 for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 is available in the package changelog.
To view this information, run the following command after the package is
installed:

rpm -q --changelog gcc4

All gcc4 users are advised to upgrade to these updated packages, which add
these enhancements and resolve these issues, bringing the gcc4 packages
more in line with those for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.2.

Solution

Before applying this update, make sure that all previously-released
errata relevant to your system have been applied.
