RHEA-2006:0066 - Product Enhancement Advisory
Synopsis
diskdumputils enhancement update
Type/Severity
Product Enhancement Advisory
Red Hat Insights patch analysis
Identify and remediate systems affected by this advisory.
Topic
Updated diskdumputils packages that add various enhancements are now available.
Description
The diskdump utilities set up the kernel to save memory images to the
specified partition.
Previously, the post-crash savecore operation re-formatted the dump
partition, destroying its contents. A new PRESERVEDUMP configuration
parameter has been added to /etc/sysconfig/diskdump that, when set to
PRESERVEDUMP=yes, prevents the re-formatting of the dump partition if the
savecore operation fails.
The DEVICE parameter in /etc/sysconfig/diskdump allows multiple devices to
be specified in a colon-separated list. These devices are now used in the
left-to-right order in which they are listed.
This update salvages kernel messages that were not written to a log file
from the crash dumpfile and appends them to /var/log/messages. This
feature is enabled by default, but can be disabled by setting
SALVAGEMESSAGE=no in /etc/sysconfig/diskdump.
Dumpfiles can now be created in a new compressed format, invoked by adding
'options diskdump compress=1' to /etc/modprobe.conf.
This update allows the deferral of the post-crash savecore operation by
setting SKIPSAVECORE=yes in /etc/sysconfig/diskdump. To perform the
savecore operations, run the command 'service diskdump enabledevice' at a
later time.
The user must now confirm that each DEVICE specified in
/etc/sysconfig/diskdump should be formatted when running the 'service
diskdump initialformat' command.
The 'service diskdump initialformat' command no longer formats any swap
partitions configured as dump devices.
Users of diskdumputils should upgrade to these updated packages, which add
these enhancements.
Solution
Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata
relevant to your system have been applied.
This update is available via Red Hat Network. To use Red Hat Network,
launch the Red Hat Update Agent with the following command:
up2date
This will start an interactive process that will result in the appropriate
RPMs being upgraded on your system.
