Enhancement Advisory dt enhancement update

Advisory: RHEA-2005:872-6
Type: Product Enhancement Advisory
Severity: N/A
Issued on: 2005-12-20
Last updated on: 2005-12-20
Affected Products: Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS (v. 4)
OVAL: N/A

Details

A new dt (data test) package is now available.

The dt (Disk Test) package contains a generic data test program used to
verify proper operation of peripherals and for obtaining performance
information. Since verification of data is performed, dt can be thought of
as a generic diagnostic tool.

Command lines for dt are similar to those of the 'dd' program, which is
popular on most UNIX systems. It contains numerous options to give the user
complete control of the test parameters.

The dt package has been used to successfully test disks, tapes, serial
lines, parallel lines, pipes, and memory mapped files. In fact, dt can be
used for any device that allows the standard open, read, write, and close
system calls. Special support is necessary for some devices, such as serial
lines, in order to set up the speed, parity, data bits, etc.

Users of the Red Hat Hardware Certification packages should install this
new package.

Solution

Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata
relevant to your system have been applied.

To update all RPMs for your particular architecture, run:

rpm -Fvh [filenames]

where [filenames] is a list of the RPMs you wish to upgrade. Only those
RPMs which are currently installed will be updated. Those RPMs which are
not installed but included in the list will not be updated. Note that you
can also use wildcards (*.rpm) if your current directory *only* contains the
desired RPMs.

Please note that this update is also available via Red Hat Network. Many
people find this an easier way to apply updates. To use Red Hat Network,
launch the Red Hat Update Agent with the following command:

up2date

This will start an interactive process that will result in the appropriate
RPMs being upgraded on your system.
