RHBA-2009:0999 - Bug Fix Advisory
Synopsis
sysklogd bug fix update
Type/Severity
Bug Fix Advisory
Red Hat Insights patch analysis
Identify and remediate systems affected by this advisory.
Topic
An updated sysklogd package that updates and clarifies a man page is now
available.
Description
The sysklogd package contains two system utilities (syslogd and klogd) that
provide support for system logging. Syslogd and klogd run as daemons and
log system messages such as sendmail logs, security logs, and error logs to
various places.
This update addresses the following bug:
- BZ#460228. The syslog init script included with Red Hat Enterprise Linux
4 sets a umask of 077 for the log file, making the syslogd log file only
readable by root. The man page, however, contradicted this, stating
logfiles were created as world readable. This updated package corrects
this, documenting the umask setting applied by the init script and
explaining why syslogd log file permissions are restricted as they are.
Users are advised to upgrade to this updated sysklogd package, which
resolves these issues.
Solution
Before applying this update, make sure that all previously-released
errata relevant to your system have been applied.
