Topic
An updated esc package that fixes various bugs and adds an enhancement is
now available.
Description
The esc package contains the "Smart Card Manager" GUI tool, which allows
users to manage security smart cards. The primary function of the tool is
to enroll smart cards, so that they can be used for common cryptographic
operations, such as secure email and website access.
This updated package fixes the following bugs:
- the Enterprise Security Client (ESC) may have crashed when performing
operations, such as enrolling or formatting a smart card, against a server
that was down. In this update, ESC no longer crashes in these situations.
- after inserting a smart card that contains certificates, the "View
Certificates" button in the "Smart Card Manager" GUI tool did not display
the certificates by default; users had to manually select the correct tab
to display them. This issue may have only occurred on freshly-installed
systems. In this update, certificates are automatically displayed when a
smart card containing certificates is inserted and the "View Certificates"
button is clicked.
- previously, when running "esc" from the command line, right-clicking on
the ESC system tray icon and selecting "Quit" caused the following warning:
Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_main_quit: assertion `main_loops != NULL' failed
In this update, this warning no longer occurs.
- when using an enrolled smart card, the window displayed after clicking
the "View Certificates" button displayed an unnecessary "Cancel" button. In
this update, the "Cancel" button has been removed.
- previously, trusted certificates in "/etc/pki/nssdb/" were not
automatically trusted by ESC. In this update, such trusted certificates are
automatically trusted by ESC.
- if the ESC daemon (escd) was running when a user logged out, an error
similar to the following was logged:
escd: *** glibc detected *** ./escd: free(): invalid pointer
In this update, the invalid pointer error no longer occurs when users log
out.
- an incorrect notification was displayed when removing Common Access
Card (CAC) smart cards. The correct notification is now displayed.
Also, ESC now uses the XULRunner engine (provided by the xulrunner
package), instead of the engine previously compiled and shipped with ESC.
This allows ESC to enjoy improvements made to the xulrunner package more
often.
Users of esc are advised to upgrade to this updated package, which resolves
these issues and adds this enhancement.
