Identify and remediate systems affected by this advisory.
Topic
An updated ntp package that fixes several bugs and adds an enhancement is
now available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.
Description
The Network Time Protocol (NTP) is used to synchronize a computer's time
with a reference time source.
This updated ntp package provides fixes for the following bugs:
- The ntpd init script would return the wrong exit code when the network
service was stopped.
- when debugging, ntpd would crash after reading first successful timestamp
from WWV Audio Refclock driver due to a buffer overflow.
- the ntp man page was updated with the correct location of the ntp
configuration file, at /etc/ntp.conf, and several inconsistencies in the
man pages were fixed. In addition, the man pages have been updated to
correspond with the HTML documentation.
- when started with the '-q' option, the ntp daemon would return a zero
exit code indicating success even when it did not set the system clock.
- Servers specified in the default ntp.conf didn't use the vendor zone
assigned by the pool.ntp.org project.
In addition, this updated package provides the following enhancements:
- ntpdate now allows the passing of additional options that can facilitate,
for example, the handling of authentication keys.
Users are advised to upgrade to this updated ntp package, which resolves
these issues and adds these enhancements.
