RHBA-2008:0456 - Bug Fix Advisory
Synopsis
chkconfig bug fix update
Type/Severity
Bug Fix Advisory
Red Hat Insights patch analysis
Identify and remediate systems affected by this advisory.
Topic
Updated chkconfig packages that fix a bug are now available.
Description
Chkconfig is a basic system utility. It updates and queries runlevel
information for system services.
In the previous chkconfig packages, running the "chkconfig" command with a
service argument that did not exist, for example, "chkconfig foo", reported
that the service was not enabled.
This was mistakenly changed in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5. Running the
"chkconfig" command with an unknown service argument returned a syntax
error. This caused scripts that rely on chkconfig to break. In these
updated packages, running the "chkconfig" command with an unknown service
argument causes chkconfig to exit with a return code of "1", service is not
enabled, which resolves this issue.
All chkconfig users are advised to upgrade to these updated packages, which
resolve this issue.
Solution
Before applying this update, make sure that all previously-released
errata relevant to your system have been applied.
