Bug Fix Advisory grub bug fix and enhancement update

Advisory: RHBA-2008:0440-2
Type: Bug Fix Advisory
Severity: N/A
Issued on: 2008-05-21
Last updated on: 2008-05-21
Affected Products: Red Hat Enterprise Linux (v. 5 server)
Red Hat Enterprise Linux Desktop (v. 5 client)
OVAL: N/A

Details

An updated grub package that fixes a bug and adds an enhancement is now
available.

The GRUB utility is responsible for booting the operating system kernel.

It was not possible to use the "grub-install" script on devices that used
the HP Smart Array CCISS driver. For example, running the "grub-install
/dev/cciss/[device]" command resulted in the following error:

expr: non-numeric argument
Installation finished. No error reported.

Although the error reports GRUB installed correctly, GRUB was never
installed to the MBR. In this updated package, the "grub-install" script
works correctly with devices that use the HP Smart Array CCISS driver.

As well, the maximum length of the kernel command line has been extended to
2,048 bytes.

Users of grub are advised to upgrade to this updated package, which
resolves this issue and adds this enhancement.
