Topic
An updated kernel-utils package that fixes multiple bugs and enhances
functionality is now
available.
Description
The kernel-utils package contains several utilities that can be used to
control the kernel or your machine hardware. This update fixes the
following bugs:
- Using the -h or --help flags of the hardlink utility resulted in a
segmentation fault on x86-64 architectures. This was caused by a difference
in the way the sizeof() operator is used in x86-64 architectures. This
issue is fixed in this update.
- On x86_64 architectures, the x86info utility was not installed. This
prevented such architectures from determining contents of model-specific
registers, CPU silicon revisions, and other CPU information. With this
update, x86info is now installed with kernel-utils on x86_64 architectures.
- irqbalance miscalculated CPU counts under certain conditions. This issue
affected systems that used CPUs containing the string "processor" in the
CPU ID field. This is corrected in this update with the addition of a line
anchor to the regular expression CPUCOUNT.
- The smartctl and smartd utilities were unable to autodetect SATA discs,
which prevented users from checking and monitoring SATA discs. This was
caused by the smartmontools startup script, which was unable to distinguish
between SCSI, SATA, and SAT disk types. To fix this, the process of
detecting disk types was relegated to the smartmontools binaries instead.
- The cpuspeed init script used incorrect exit codes. This was corrected by
rebuilding the cpuspeed init script as per Red Hat specifications.
This update also adds support for CCISS RAID controllers in smartmontools.
In addition, the microcode_ctl utility included in this update contains the
necessary firmware errata for the latest Intel processors.
Users are advised to upgrade to this package, which applies these fixes.
Solution
Before applying this update, make sure that all previously-released
errata relevant to your system have been applied.
This update is available via Red Hat Network. Details on how to use
