Bug Fix Advisory am-utils bug fix update

Advisory: RHBA-2005:223-6
Type: Bug Fix Advisory
Severity: N/A
Issued on: 2005-09-28
Last updated on: 2005-09-28
Affected Products: Red Hat Desktop (v. 3)
Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS (v. 3)
Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES (v. 3)
Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS (v. 3)

Details

Updated am-utils packages that remove possible mtab corruption are now
available.

The am-utils packages include Amd, the popular BSD automounter, as well as
support tools.

Previous versions of am-utils used a different method for locking
/etc/mtab. In the presence of another automounter (AutoFS4) these earlier
versions could cause inadvertent mtab corruption under certain conditions
(where parallel mounts via both of the automounters were triggered in a
non-trivial count). A potential problem with am-utils and hand-mounting
also exists, but is much less immediate.

This release should fix most problems where only a few competing mounts are
run at once. However, if your automounters carry out several tens or
hundreds of mounts, the problem may persist, requiring an update of the
util-linux package (which includes the /bin/mount program) to remedy it.

Users should upgrade to these updated packages, which resolve these
issues.
