Bug Fix Advisory Updated kernel packages available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Update 4

Advisory: RHBA-2004:550-33
Type: Bug Fix Advisory
Severity: N/A
Issued on: 2004-12-20
Last updated on: 2004-12-20
Affected Products: Red Hat Desktop (v. 3)
Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS (v. 3)
Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES (v. 3)
Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS (v. 3)

Details

Updated kernel packages are now available as part of ongoing support and
maintenance of Red Hat Enterprise Linux version 3. This is the fourth
regular update.

The Linux kernel handles the basic functions of the operating system.

This is the fourth regular kernel update to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.

New features introduced by this update include:

- support for sys_epoll on the S/390 and S/390x architectures
- support for Open Sound System AC97 plugin infrastructure
- support for PROT_GROWSDOWN/PROT_GROWSUP mprotect(2) flags
- extension of the disk dump facility to the AMD64 and EM64T platforms

There were many bug fixes in various parts of the kernel. The ongoing
effort to resolve these problems has resulted in a marked improvement
in the reliability and scalability of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.

Some key areas affected by these fixes include disk and network drivers,
USB and SATA support, single-stepping through ptrace(2), as well as the
VM, SCSI, and auditing subsystems. In particular, there were several
critical fixes made to eliminate inappropriate swapping and kswapd
hangs in various memory contention scenarios.

The following device drivers have been upgraded to new versions:

aacraid ---- 1.1.5-2361
bonding ---- 2.6.0
cciss ------ 2.4.52.RH2
e1000 ------ 5.3.19-k2
emulex ----- 7.1.14
fusion ----- 2.05.16.02
i810_audio - 1.01
ips -------- 7.10.18
megaraid2 -- 2.10.8.2-RH1
pcnet32 ---- 1.30c
qlogic ----- 7.01.01
tg3 -------- 3.10RH
zfcp ------- 5.31.2.11

Note: The kernel-unsupported package contains various drivers and modules
that are unsupported and therefore might contain security problems that
have not been addressed.

All Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 users are advised to upgrade their
kernels to the packages associated with their machine architectures
and configurations as listed in this erratum.

Solution

Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata
relevant to your system have been applied.

To update all RPMs for your particular architecture, run:

rpm -Fvh [filenames]

where [filenames] is a list of the RPMs you wish to upgrade. Only those
RPMs which are currently installed will be updated. Those RPMs which are
not installed but included in the list will not be updated. Note that you
can also use wildcards (*.rpm) if your current directory *only* contains the
desired RPMs.

Please note that this update is also available via Red Hat Network. Many
people find this an easier way to apply updates. To use Red Hat Network,
launch the Red Hat Update Agent with the following command:

up2date

This will start an interactive process that will result in the appropriate
RPMs being upgraded on your system.

If up2date fails to connect to Red Hat Network due to SSL
Certificate Errors, you need to install a version of the
up2date client with an updated certificate. The latest version of
up2date is available from the Red Hat FTP site and may also be
downloaded directly from the RHN website:
