Bug Fix Advisory Fix memory leak in Xft

Advisory: RHBA-2002:305-04
Type: Bug Fix Advisory
Severity: N/A
Issued on: 2003-08-08
Last updated on: 2003-08-08
Affected Products: Red Hat Linux 8.0
OVAL: N/A

Details

A memory leak was discovered in the Xft library on non-RENDER X servers.
This errata fixes the issue.

The Xft memory leak manifests itself when any GTK+ 2.0, Qt 3.0, or other
Xft-based application renders text on an X server that lacks the RENDER
extension. This includes the VNC X server and the default XFree86 X server
for some video chipsets, as well as many X servers shipped with
past versions of Red Hat Linux or with other operating systems.

The bug occurs most commonly with terminal applications as their extensive
text handling resulted in rapid memory leaks. However most applications are
impacted by the bug.

It is recommended that all users install this update.

Solution

Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata
relevant to your system have been applied.

To update all RPMs for your particular architecture, run:

rpm -Fvh [filenames]

where [filenames] is a list of the RPMs you wish to upgrade. Only those
RPMs which are currently installed will be updated. Those RPMs which are
not installed but included in the list will not be updated. Note that you
can also use wildcards (*.rpm) if your current directory *only* contains the
desired RPMs.

Please note that this update is also available via Red Hat Network. Many
people find this an easier way to apply updates. To use Red Hat Network,
launch the Red Hat Update Agent with the following command:

up2date

This will start an interactive process that will result in the appropriate
RPMs being upgraded on your system.
